Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States. The skin protects against heat, sunlight, injury, and infection. Skin also helps control body temperature and stores water and fat. Most cases of melanoma, the deadliest kind of skin cancer, are caused by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays. Melanoma is a kind of skin cancer. It isn’t as common as other types of skin cancer, but it is the most serious. Melanoma can affect your skin only, or it may spread to your organs and bones. As with other cancers, treatment for melanoma works best when the cancer is found early.

UV Safety Month

July is UV Safety Month, and it’s time to be aware of the sun’s good. As we enjoy the beautiful summertime weather, we need to keep in mind several issues about the effects of the sun’s ultraviolet radiation. We need sunshine. It helps with our body’s production of Vitamin D and has been tied to issues of depression in some people who don’t get enough. However, overexposure to the sun can lead to a variety of health risks. You may be surprised about some of the specific dangers of sun exposure and how you can protect yourself.

It’s not surprising that as we close out May and head into June it signifies both the official kickoff to summer and Skin Cancer Awareness month. It’s a great reminder to protect your skin while enjoying the beautiful outdoors. Whether it’s a day at the pool, a barbecue with friends or simply driving in the car, protecting your skin from the harmful effects of the sun is important not only during the summer, but all year long.
